How BCT India Is Transforming Tribal Education in Visakhapatnam

For nearly five decades, Bhagavatula Charitable Trust has been working in the remote tribal areas of Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh. Our Residential High School (RHS) programme has been one of the most impactful initiatives, providing quality education to children from communities that have historically been denied access to formal schooling.

The Challenge: Education in Remote Tribal Areas

Many tribal villages in the Eastern Ghats are located in hilly terrain with poor road connectivity. Children often have to walk several kilometres to reach the nearest school. Poverty, lack of awareness, and cultural barriers further compound the problem. The dropout rates in these areas remain alarmingly high, with girls being disproportionately affected.

Our Holistic Approach

The BCT Residential High School doesn't just provide classroom education — it offers a complete ecosystem for growth. Students receive nutritious meals, healthcare, mentoring, and extracurricular activities including sports, arts, and cultural programmes. The school follows a child-centric pedagogy that respects and integrates tribal knowledge systems.

We believe that education is not merely about passing exams. It's about building confident, compassionate, and capable individuals who can contribute to their communities while pursuing their dreams.

Impact by the Numbers

Over the past decade, more than 3,500 tribal students have graduated from our RHS programme. Many have gone on to pursue higher education, with several students now enrolled in engineering, medical, and nursing colleges. The school maintains a 92% pass rate in the SSC board exams, well above the district average.

Looking Ahead

We are expanding our digital education infrastructure with smart classrooms and computer labs. Our goal is to ensure that no child in the tribal areas of Visakhapatnam is left behind because of their birthplace. With the support of our partners and donors, we are confident that the next generation of tribal youth will have every opportunity to succeed.
