About This Programme

Sanctioned to BCT by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in 1995, the BCT Krishi Vigyan Kendra (BCT- KVK) works towards enhancing and improving agricultural outcomes for farmers. Since its inception, the BCT KVK operates through a range of methods, all enabling towards bettering quality of work and life for farmers in the region.

Today, BCT-KVK’s operational area—earlier part of Visakhapatnam district—spans the regions of Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, and Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) districts, with a concentrated presence in Anakapalli & 4 mandals of ASR district. With every initiative, BCT continues its mission of empowering farmers, advancing sustainable practices, and strengthening rural resilience.

The BCT KVK operates various demonstration units, model farms, and conducts regular training(s) and awareness campaigns. The campus at Haripuram, has a laboratory and model farms, where scientists work so that farmers can experience qualitative and quantitative yields from their work. As a result, farmers across the district have benefitted from the timely, action-oriented and innovative support by the BCT-KVK; reaching about 45,000 farmers/year.

At the heart of BCT-KVK is a multidisciplinary team of specialists in Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Protection, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, Veterinary Sciences, Home Science, Farm Management, and IT. Supported by an efficient administrative and technical staff, this team works collaboratively to address the diverse and evolving needs of rural communities.

Collaborations: BCT KVK has collaborations for technical and extension supports with ICAR institutions BCT-KVK maintains strong and purposeful collaborations with ICAR institutes, State Agricultural Universities, line departments, and local NGOs, ensuring both technical backstopping and effective extension support. These partnerships expand the outreach of KVK interventions, enabling wider dissemination of scientific practices and innovative technologies. By working in synergy with these institutions, BCT-KVK enhances its ability to reach a larger number of farmers, deliver need-based solutions, and promote sustainable agricultural development in the region., State Agriculture institutions, NGOs working in the area to reach more farmers

On-Farm Trials (OFT)

Through On-Farm Trials (OFTs), BCT-KVK systematically evaluates and fine-tunes innovative agricultural technologies to ensure their suitability under local farming conditions. These trials provide critical insights into the adaptability, efficiency, and profitability of new practices before they are recommended on a larger scale.

Frontline Demonstrations (FLD)

Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs) serve as a bridge between research and adoption, where proven technologies are showcased directly in farmers’ fields. These demonstrations enable farmers to witness the tangible benefits of improved practices—be it higher yields, cost reduction, or resource efficiency—thereby fostering greater confidence in adopting them.

Training programs, Field Visits, Advisory Services

In addition, BCT-KVK organizes training programs, field visits, advisory services, and vocational courses, creating multiple avenues for capacity building. These initiatives not only transfer scientific knowledge but also empower farmers with hands-on skills and practical exposure. The focus is firmly on transforming information into application, ensuring that interventions lead to measurable improvements in productivity, sustainability, and livelihood security.

Besides the above initiatives, BCT KVK develops model plots and provides training on various income generating activities. Based on the KVK mandate, local requirements and availability of raw materials, the BCT KVK conducts awareness and other sessions on a regular basis.

How We Work

Training programmes for farmers, farm women, and rural youth

Regular trainings are conducted for farmers on seed treatment, disease prevention and management, off season cultivation and other aspects. Farmers also learn about value addition activities to enable them to generate better income. These programs enable farmers with practical knowledge that help them to reduce drudgery, expenditure and also improve outcomes.

Provides mentorship and field trials support to startups

BCT KVK is one of the few KVK's in the country integrated with a startup incubator in Grameena Incubation Center, which is also a MEITY recognised Center of Excellence in Agritech sector.

BCT KVK has mentored and guided about 10 startups in the agritech sector and also assisted the startups to conduct on field trials of their products giving them valuable feedback, mentoring and guidance to further the startup's prototypes to MVP stage.

Outreach

This important aspect enables a connect between rural and tribal farmers with government initiatives, setting up training units, skill development programmes, farm-based entrepreneurship, supply etc.

Animal husbandry

In-house veterinary scientists also enable veterinary support by distribution of livestock, conducting sessions on their care and enabling additional income to families through proper management.
