With the belief that the physically challenged in rural Visakhapatnam receive equal opportunities, and can go beyond being perceived as a burden on the family, operates the ‘Skill & Health For Physically Challenged’. Serving communities since BCTs inception, this unit serves people with disabilities through a Community Rehabilitation Program. It also runs a residential center called the Sri PV Venkatesan Center for the Challenged.
Operating in over 12 mandals, community-based rehabilitation takes care to the doorsteps of people in villages. With a physiotherapy center on campus, trained physiotherapists also visit villages and provide services at the doorstep of those who need them. Partnering with organizations like the Tata Relief Committee, Heart and Hand for the Handicapped (USA) and other organizations, help is rendered by providing-Aids and appliances-Prosthetic and orthotic services-Physiotherapy services and training-Medical certificates and concession passes-Medical care and even-Self-employment initiatives
Besides reaching out to people in villages, the Sri PV Venkatesan Centre for the Challenged has been operational since 2000. Based in the scenic Panchadarla farm, here physically challenged students get to stay and learn skills like tailoring, embroidery and agriculture. Speech therapy is conducted for these students, as they also learn sign language. Finally, students learn academic skills as well. Students benefit from-A peaceful learning environment in the midst of nature.- A well-articulated syllabus comprising of academics, vocational and social animation skills.-Health and wellness support through speech therapies, provision of hearing aids and also orthotic and prosthetic support.
